Shortly after the Civil War Captain Porter tries to reinstall law and order in a district of the poor south. South born himself but working for the former North he has to fight against hate and mistrust.
Then additionaly a new officer (Lex) appears who gets on his nerves with his conceit and incompetence. To make it worse Porter learns that Hodges has known his wife from former times in Washington where she still longs to be...
This is one of very few movies with an unpleasant role for Lex, but in this one he is most convincing.
