New York advertising specialist Jim Blandings, his wife Muriel and their daughters Betsy and Joana live in a city apartment which has become too narrow for the family. So Muriel asks lawyer Bill Cole, a friend of the family, to get some offers of modification.
When Mr. Blandings finds out about these plans he is startled about the costs. Accidentally he sees an ad offering a house plus ground for just "a few dollars more" than the scheduled modification costs. So he takes his wife and starts out to visit the offered object ending with an imprudent and too costly purchase.
The house turns out to be a ramshackle hut and each expert advises to pull it down. With plans of a completely new house the trouble starts...
Nice comedy with three top stars in the leading roles. Lex has just a small part but with the opportunity of some enjoyable scenes.
